On May 24, 2024, a powerful storm swept through the Big Island, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Waipiʻo Valley, a lush and sacred area known for its loʻi kalo (taro patches), suffered significant damage. The storm washed out trees and debris, disrupting the flow of the "Poʻo Wai" stream head and blocking the ʻauwai inlets that are vital for irrigating the loʻi kalo. Restoring this critical infrastructure was essential for the valley's agricultural and cultural sustainability.
