Stream Healthand Kalo Growth
In Hawai'i, the success of kalo farming is directly linked to the health of streams like those from Nenewe Waterfall. Clear, flowing water is crucial for growing healthy kalo. It's vital to keep these streams free of blockages to maintain water quality and flow, which directly impacts loʻi.
Different varieties of kalo, such as ‘eleʻele makoko’, ‘moi’, and Kauaʻi moi are grown in separate loʻī. Lehua is known for its great taste and is often used in traditional dishes, while moi is favored for its texture in poi making.
Maintaining stream health through regular cleaning ensures robust kalo growth and supports the ecosystem. This practice reflects the Hawaiian value of living in balance with nature, preserving it for future generations.
