"Hoʻihoʻi ʻia o Hamumu i kona wahi kuʻuna ma Moʻokini Heiau - The return of Hamumu to her ancestral place at Moʻokini Heiau"
Pohaku ʻHamumuʻ - Moʻokini Heiau at Kohala, Hawaiʻi
The Moʻokini Heiau, a beacon of our cultural heritage, recently witnessed a significant event - the return of the sacred pōhaku, Hamumu. Known under the pseudonym "Kapaʻaheo" since 1955, at the Bishop Museum, Hamumu has now returned home, fulfilling the dreams of Kahuna Nui Leimomi Moʻokini Lum. Hale Mua Cultural Group, in humble partnership with The Royal Order of Kamehameha I - Moku o Kohala, and other dedicated parties, was privileged to support this historic event. We are grateful to have contributed to this cultural milestone in preserving and honoring our ancestral lands. On July 20, 2024, the public was invited to join us in welcoming the return of ʻHamumuʻ at Moʻokini Heiau. Positioned just outside the Heiau near the salt pan, Hamumu can once again feel the salt air, resonating with the spirit of Kohala. Our heartfelt mahalo to everyone who assisted in her journey. We continue to be inspired by their commitment and look forward to further collaborations in preserving our cultural heritage.
