Ahu A ʻUmi Heiau - Site Preservation
The Ahu A Umi Heiau Complex stands as a testament to Hawaii's rich cultural history and the enduring legacy of Chief ʻUmi. Named after the renowned 16th-century ruler, ʻUmi-a-Līloa, this sacred site holds deep significance in Hawaiian lore. It is believed that Chief ʻUmi constructed this heiau to honor his divine lineage and to seek the favor of the gods for his reign.
Despite facing years of neglect and abuse, including damage from cattle and ranching activities, the Ahu A Umi Heiau Complex has persevered, thanks to the dedicated efforts of caretakers like the Royal Order of Kamehameha I brothers from Moku o Kona and volunteers from the Hale Mua Cultural Group. With their commitment to preservation and restoration, this historic site has been safeguarded for future generations, ensuring that its cultural significance remains intact.
To further honor and protect this sacred place, the caretakers organize bi-monthly Huakaʻi journeys to the Ahu A Umi Heiau Complex. During these excursions, participants engage in rituals and ceremonies aimed to malama the site, clearing debris, maintaining pathways, and offering prayers for its continued protection. These Huakaʻi journeys serve as a vital way to connect with our heritage, fostering a deep sense of reverence and responsibility for our ancestral lands.
